Susan Napier, Ph.D., is professor and director of the Japanese program in the Department of German, Russian and Asian Languages and Literatures (GRALL) in the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University.  Initially a specialist in modern Japanese literature, she began to develop an interest in Japanese animation (anime) and comics (manga) in the late 1990’s and published the first major English language scholarly book on anime in 2001. She has continued to work on anime and manga since that time and her other interests include fantasy and science fiction and gender and the body.  Dr. Napier also lectures on English fantasy literature and will be publishing an article on the Harry Potter series.
