Alice H. Lichtenstein, D.Sc., is Director of the Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University; Stanley N. Gershoff Professor of Nutrition Science and Policy at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy; and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.
Dr. Lichtenstein’s laboratory examines the interplay between diet and heart disease risk factors. The primary aim of the group’s work is to adjudicate the potential effect of dietary interventions on cardiovascular disease risk factors and expand the understanding of underlying mechanisms with specific emphasis on post-menopausal women and older men.
Dr. Lichtenstein’s research interests include dietary fatty acids, nutrition, lipoproteins, and cardiovascular disease risk; phytoestrogens/soy protein; genetically modified/selectively bred oils; glycemic index; cholesterol homeostasis; and nutrition policy. She is a member of the American Heart Association’s Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism, and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Councils and the American Society for Nutrition. She served on the USDA/HHS 2000 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and on Institute of Medicine committees on Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) for macronutrients, Front -of-Package Nutrition Labeling and committee on Examination of the Consequences of Sodium Reduction in Populations.
