José Ordovas, Ph.D., is Director of the Nutrition and Genomics Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University; professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and a member of the Genetics and Pharmacology & Experimental Therapeutics graduate program faculty at the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Ordovas is a world-renowned pioneer in the field of nutrigenomics, the study of the effects of food and nutrients on gene expression. His major research interests are genes related to cardiovascular disease and obesity and their interaction with dietary factors.
Ordovas is an author on more than 650 peer-reviewed journal articles and has written numerous reviews on these topics as well as four books. International recognition includes the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary’s Honor Award; the American Association for Clinical Chemistry award; the Friedman School Distinguished Faculty Award; Gold Medal of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and the International Academy of Gastronomy’s Gran Prix de la Science de l’Alimentation.
In addition, Ordovas has been awarded membership to several Spanish Royal Academies, including those of Pharmacy, Medicine, Nutrition and Chemistry. He also holds an honorary degree in medicine from the University of Cordoba. Past appointments include an Institute of Medicine committee on seafood consumption and the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences.
