Harris A. Berman, M.D., is Dean of Tufts University School of Medicine and Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine. Previously he served as Vice Dean, Dean of Public Health and Professional Degree Programs, and Chair of the Department of Public Health and Family Medicine.
Before coming to Tufts University, Dr. Berman was a pioneer in the development of managed care in New England. In 1971, Dr. Berman co-founded the Matthew Thornton Health Plan in Nashua, New Hampshire, one of the first HMOs in New England. From 1984 until he joined Tufts University in 2003, he was CEO of Tufts Health Plan.
Berman graduated cum laude from Harvard College before earning his M.D. at Columbia University in 1964. After a residency at the New England Medical Center, now Tufts Medical Center, he joined the Peace Corps and served in India, where oversaw the medical care for 1,500 volunteers across the country.
